21 Best Vegan Meal Delivery Companies of 2021

When life gives you lemons…

Make some frosty lemonade! That’s how we felt in March 2020, when the global pandemic shuttered borders and halted the flow of travel. Over a year later, and travel is still a sticky mess of ever-changing restrictions, lockdowns, and canceled trips. Enter the best vegan meal delivery companies of 2021.

As content creators who breathe, sleep, and (mostly) eat multi-cultural experiences, we knew we had to do something new.

So we scoured the Plant-Based-Web to find, test, and review the best vegan meal delivery companies of 2021.

Today, it’s easier than ever to get globally-inspired vegan meals delivered directly to your door. In fact, you could say vegan meal delivery companies have mushroomed in 2021 (heyyo!).

Dad jokes aside, we spent a lot of time putting together this list of the 21 best vegan/plant-based meal plans and delivery memberships of 2021. Most were good, some were great, and almost all were delicious.

It has been a long year. These plant-based meal delivery rankings represents nearly 9 months of rigorous taste testing and finger licking. Special thanks to our Corporate Executives, Bow Tie Benny and Louie Spots, without whom this journey would never have commenced.

Category Winners: Top 5 Vegan Meal Delivery Companies of 2021

Best Overall: Sunbasket

When it comes to best overall value, variety, and meal experience, Sunbasket is the clear winner. Yes, Purple Carrot has a bigger menu that is entirely plant-based. And we agree it’s a close call. Both deserve the #1 spot.

But we think Sunbasket edges out the competition with savory recipes that—although sometimes higher in calories—we just couldn’t get enough of.

  • Starting at: $55.96
  • Premade Meals and Meal Kits Available
  • Best for: Anyone who wants to eat more delicious plant-based meals (and doesn’t mind a few extra calories here and there)
  • What we love: The variety! Although the menu is smaller than some, the meals themselves are inventive and flavorful.
  • What we dislike: Sunbasket isn’t entirely plant-based. Choosing the vegan option immediately limits the menu. For a 100% plant-based experience, we recommend Purple Carrot (see below).
  • Recommended meals: Turkish Vegetable Soup and the Rainbow Quinoa-Black Bean Tacos.

| Excellent

Sunbasket is one of the most affordable services we reviewed. You can get started for as little as $55.96 for 4 total servings. That’s just $13.99 per serving, which is only a couple dollars more than most competitors.

| Good

Though you’ll pay a little extra per serving, we think Sunbasket’s meal variety makes it more than worthwhile. Yes, selecting the “vegan program” will limit your menu choices. But overall, we found the meals we reviewed to be creative, tasty, and a lot of fun to cook.

Ease of Use

| Excellent

Most companies score a 5/5 here. Sunbasket is no exception. We love their website, sign up, and meal selection process. Scheduling deliveries was intuitive as well.

Best for Beginners: Purple Carrot

Purple Carrot is neck-and-neck with Sunbasket, but we think the 100% plant-based menu makes this company a shoe-in for Best for Beginners. Just pick your meals and you’re all set—no vegan, cruelty free, or plant-based knowledge required. Plus, Purple Carrot’s extensive menu will have your mouth watering long before food arrives at your doorstep.

  • Starting at: $71.94
  • Meal Kits and Prepared Meals Available
  • Best for: Health-conscious people who want an easy and tasty way to eat more plants
  • What we love: Both Prepared Meals and Meal Kits are available, so you don’t have to cook if you don’t want to. And the menu! Good luck picking just 3 meals…
  • What we dislike: You have to read the fine print when it comes to pausing and canceling your subscription, especially if you receive Purple Carrot as a gift (for more info, visit our full review below)
  • Recommended meals: Pumpkin Ramen Meal Kit and the Jackfruit Carnitas Premade Meal

| Excellent

Purple Carrot is among the most affordable meal delivery companies to try, starting at just $71.94 for 6 servings of globally-inspired meals. That comes out to $11.99 per meal, which is the exact median for competitors in the meal delivery space.

| Very Good

Yes, Purple Carrot will have you broadening your horizons with delicious plant-based cuisine from around the world. But you can also choose between Pre-Made Meals and Meal Kits, adding even more variety to your meal experience.

Ease of Use

| Excellent

Registration, meal selection, delivery, and prep are all simple and straight-forward. Especially the Meal Kits, which come with full color instructions on how to prepare the meal. Although recipes have rich flavors, we found the instructions to be easy to follow.

Best On-the-Go: Daily Harvest

Time seems to escape us all, whether commuting, traveling, juggling jobs, or managing family and friends. Fortunately, companies like Daily Harvest make it super easy to get high quality nutrition while on-the-go.

Convenience, good looks, and next-level taste are just the start. We awarded Daily Harvest with Best On-The-Go Vegan Meal Delivery Service of 2021 because of their stellar commitment to regenerative farming, feeding their local community, and sustainability. For more, visit our in-depth Daily Harvest review page (link below).

  • Starting at: $62.93
  • DIY Meal Kits Only
  • Best for: Urbanites who thrive on smoothies, soups, bowls, and other fit-fare.
  • What we love: The nutrition! Using a special same-day harvest/freezing technique, Daily Harvest preserves up to 50% more antioxidants & vitamins compared to ordinary produce.
  • What we dislike: Some people take issue with the serving size. But we found serving sizes to be normal, especially if you’re used to light-and-healthy eating.
  • Recommended meals: Mango and Papaya Smoothie and the Spinach & Shitake Grits Bowl

| Very Good

You can get started with Daily Harvest for $62.93. And while that’s more expensive than Sunbasket and Purple Carrot, it includes way more servings. Seven, to be exact. Bringing your cost per serving down to $8.99, which is the lowest of all companies we reviewed.

| Excellent

Daily Harvest has one of the most diverse menus out there. Smoothies, soups, grain bowls, forager bowls, and even a new ultra-nutritious milk alternative—how’s that for a range of options? Best of all, the flavors don’t disappoint.

Ease of Use

| Excellent

Daily Harvest also scores a perfect 5/5 for being easy and intuitive to use. From sign-up to meal selection and delivery, everything is 100% plant-based and easy to enjoy. We especially like the Daily Harvest website and how easy they make account/subscription management.

Best for Athletes: Trifecta

If you push your mind and body daily, you need a meal plan that is science-based and nutritionally sound. Trifecta is a decisive stand-out in this arena. Their relatively new Vegan Plan is fresh, delicious, and totally tailored to meet your nutritional needs. And with the Trifecta App, members can also track essential fitness metrics, log their progress, and receive personalized On Demand coaching.

  • Starting at: $90.93
  • Premade Meals Only
  • Best for: Athletes, Dreamers, and Over Achievers who know that food is fuel—and demand high octane.
  • What we love: Trifecta’s commitment to holistic health. No other company combines meals, technology, and social engagement better.
  • What we dislike: The menu is Chef’s Choice, so you are limited when it comes to picking meals. This took some getting used to, but we think it’s a small price to pay.
  • Recommended meals: The menu rotates weekly, depending on what’s fresh and in season. Our favorites were the Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Quinoa and the Oatmeal Walnut Bake.

| Very Good

You’ll spend at least $90.93 to get started with Trifecta. Whereas other meal plans start at 4 meals/week, the Trifecta minimum is 7. That’s just $12.99 per meal, which is only $1 more than competitors. You’ll also get Free Shipping, bringing the cost/meal down even further.

| Good

Trifecta takes a Chef’s Choice approach to menus. According to Trifecta, this ensures everything is locally sourced, super fresh, and maximally sustainable. It feels a bit limiting, but we think it’s a small concession to make for such a comprehensive nutritional program.

Ease of Use

| Excellent

Trifecta nailed it with their website, FAQ sections, videos, and customer service. Everything is easy to understand and set up. And when it comes to pausing or canceling, Trifecta allows you to make those changes (and more) simply by logging in and updating your profile.

Most Innovative: 22 Days Nutrition

If you are looking for the most personalized experience available, 22 Days Nutrition is probably the service for you. This innovative app makes clean plant-based eating fool proof. Just log on, set your preferences, select recipes that look good, and the groceries are delivered right to your door. The only downside: Nothing comes pre-made. If you’re looking for pre-prepped meals that you can heat and eat, we recommend looking at Sunbasket, Purple Carrot, or Trifecta instead.

  • Starting at: $39 every 3 months
  • Grocery Delivery App – Select recipes, receive ingredients, cook the meals
  • Best for: People who want to improve their health, don’t mind cooking, and want automate mealtime from recipe-selection to first-bite.
  • What we love: All recipes are based on NY Times Best Selling Author Marco Borges’ 22 Day Nutrition Plan, which aims to reset your health via clean plant-based eating.
  • What we dislike: No option for Pre-Made meals. If you’re looking for a meal delivery service that you can heat-and-eat, 22 Days Nutrition is not for you.
  • Recommended meals: Mixed Berry Nice Cream (non-dairy ice cream) and the Peanut Butter Carmel Banana Bread

| Excellent

Assuming you don’t mind playing chef, 22 Days Nutrition is a steal. Getting started costs just $13/month, billed once at $39 for the Quarter. And since it’s a grocery delivery app, you’ll only be paying for the specific ingredients you need, based on the recipes you select.

| Excellent

Sometimes, “clean eating” means boring combinations of the same bland food staples. Not the case with 22 Days Nutrition. We were blown away with how inventive these recipes are, especially the “nice cream” non-dairy ice cream!

Ease of Use

| Excellent

The main benefit of the 22 Days Nutrition Vegan Plan is convenience. There is no planning meals each week, and there is no worry about making sure you have the right ingredients. Everything is simplified, freeing you to focus on life outside the kitchen.

Recommended Reading: Vegan Meal Delivery Services FAQ

In the new age of technology, going to the store is so 2010. Whether you work long hours, dread grocery shopping, burn everything, need to hit that workout class, or want to impress a date (we won’t tell), vegan meal delivery service is your answer. It’s also a great way to transition to a vegan lifestyle or try new recipes.

There are several services that are emerging, but with these options, which one do you choose? That depends on your effort level. And trust us, this is a judgement free zone.

Should I choose DIY Meal Kits or Pre-made Meal Delivery?

There are two categories for vegan meal delivery: DIY and pre-made meals. Do it yourself is exactly what it means… do it yourself. Your delivery will include premeasured ingredients and sauces, as well as recipes. Everything is prepped, but the cooking and presentation are up you. Getting nervous already? Don’t worry. There are options for those that want to leave the cook– creative process up to someone else. Premade vegan meals arrive either ready to eat or with minimal preparation (heating it up in the oven or on the stove).

The services don’t stop there. They branch out into different food categories. These categories include vegan, vegan plant-based, organic, raw vegan, gluten-free, and a combination of those options.

Here’s a breakdown in case you’re on the fence about where you fit.

  • Vegan: using or containing no animal products.
  • Plant-based: a diet procured from plants, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, seeds, and legumes. This diet is free of refined sugars and processed foods. A plant based diet differs from raw because foods can be cooked about 118 degrees.
  • Raw vegan: a diet that excludes foods cooked about 118 degrees Fahrenheit. It includes raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, and grain/legume sprouts.
  • Organic vegan: this includes foods that are produced with plant based fertilizers, without the use of chemical fertilizers.
  • Gluten-free vegan: a diet that excludes gluten, a binding protein often found in wheats and grains.

Final Thoughts: Choosing a Delivery Service That’s Right for YOU

Now that we got the technical stuff out of the way…  How do you choose a vegan meal delivery service? Start by choosing the company that best fits your lifestyle needs. New to this? Check out our primer on Veganism first.

  • Decide which style of service suits you- DIY or premade meals.
  • Decide which diet interests you or aligns with your health needs.
  • Decide how frequently you would like the service: one off, daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly deliveries, or subscriptions.
